Replacing parquet floor with tiles

What do we need?

Frequently, in renovations, existing wooden floor could be removed and replaced with ceramic tiles.

How do we do it?

NSF 610 is ideal for preparation of substrates before tile application. For bigger thickness applications use of NSF 611 (1 – 4 cm) is suggested.

ADVANTAGES: High Mechanical Strength – High Flexibility

allagh-dapedou-patwma-plakidio.5 allagh-dapedou-patwma-plakidio.6

STEP 5: Apply lightweight, thermal insulating floor screed NSD 620 before it gets dried

allagh-dapedou-patwma-plakidio.7

STEP 6: When NSD 620 has dried, proceed with the application of self-leveling screed NSF 610 (up to 10 mm)

allagh-dapedou-patwma-plakidio.9

Spiky roll is used for removing bubbles which might be created during application of self-leveling screeds. Then, proceed with tile application. We recommend the one-component, super-elastic tile adhesive (S2), VKW 129, which is ideal for demanding applications, like areas with permanent moisture content and heavy expansions and contractions.

Ceramic tiles application on wooden surfaces (MDF etc)

What do we need?

In renovations we often need to make an application in a very small area/room.

How do we do it?

In such occasions the application of an elastic tile adhesive like VKW 132 is suggested. VKW 132 ACRYL is the ideal tile adhesive for such applications in inside areas (wood, MDF etc).  Application of absorbing and non-absorbing ceramic tiles, can be made on walls and fl oors, offering a fast and durable solution.

What do we need?

In restoration, we often have the need of new tiling in order to renovate areas.

How do we do it?

In such occasions the application of an elastic tile adhesive like VKW 129 is uggested. VKW 129 is ideal for very demanding applications, since it is highly fl exible (C2TE S2), offering strong bonding and high resistance to expansions and contractions.

Tiling on Floor Heating

What do we need?

The floors having floor heating show strong contractions resulting the slab can not follow the movements of the substrate and fail causing cracking or peeling of the tiles.

How do we do it?

Ideal solution are adhesives with increased elasticity like VKW 128 or VKW 129 and grouts FMF 150 and FMF 160 LUX reinforced with improver additive VLX 186.

BAKER ROD

Step by step

  1. To prepare the surface and applying the adhesive see the Guidelines for Adhesives.
  2. For filling and leveling of the floor should be used cement NSD 600 reinforced with improver additive (Latex) GLX 296 which is added to the water mixture in a ratio water: GLX 296 = 1: 3 to 1: 2.
  3. For grouting use grouts of THRAKON reinforced with improver additive VLX 186 which is added to the water mixture in a ratio water: VLX 186 = 1: 3.
  4. The floors grouting and patency is allowed after 24 hours, while the wall grouting is allowed after 12 hours.

Signs of the application that need special attention:

  • The most important point in the application of tiles on floors that have underfloor heating systems is the provision for expansion and contraction of the system. Some basic rules for harmoniously mutually cooperating mechanics – building system:
  • It must be provided with expansion joints in spaces less than 40m2. The relationship between sides should not exceed 1: 2. The joints are filled with use of polyurethane mastic ELASTO-PU and the corresponding string support joint closed cell BAKER ROD.
  • Strip of insulation with thickness of at least 1 cm, must cover construction ( contact points floor – wall) to discharged dilations of the coated surface.
  • Before bonding the tiles (no earlier than 21 days) we operate the heating and we reserve three days gradually increasing the temperature to 25-28 C. Then close the heating and after 24 hours we can move in welding tile.

Kitchen Tiling

What do we need?

The tiling in the kitchen presents increased requirements locally, especially in the points behind, above and around the countertop of the kitchen and the hood, because there is high thermal and chemical resistance and high temperature water vapor. The materials used must withstand frequent use of detergents and eliminate the risk of water vapor penetration behind the tiles.

How do we do it?

Ideal solution are adhesives with increased elasticity like VKW 129 and water-repellent grouts FMF 150 and FMF 160 LUX. Also recommended and waterproofing of masonry before paving with the waterproofing system of the acrylic brushable membrane DSF 300 FLEX HYDROSTOP.

Step by step

  1. To prepare the surface and applying the adhesive see the Guidelines for Adhesives.
  2. In the event that required filling and leveling of the floor it can be done with the cement floors of THRAKON.
  3. If required filling and leveling of the wall can be applied any of the plastering Systems of THRAKON.
  4. Before bonding the tiles waterproof surfaces using acrylic brushable membrane DSF 300 FLEX HYDROSTOP. 5.For grouting used the grouts of THRAKON. The floors grouting and patency is allowed after 24 hours, while wall grouting is allowed after 12 hours.

Signs of the application that need special attention:

  • For bonding tiles on the kitchen counter application is recommended to be done either with cementitious high elasticity adhesive  VKW 129 or by acrylic adhesive VKW 142 ACRYL. Correspondingly, the grouting of the counter is recommended to place the epoxy grout FMF 155 which is unaffected by chemicals, acids and cleaning agents.
  • The contact surface of the bench by the wall lined with tiles: When installing the bench care that the tiles cannot touch the surface of the bench and has a margin than 5mm in cases where the bench resting the plaster of the wall.
  • The adhesive must not come in contact with the surface of the bench but ends on the lower surface of the tile. This is because the bench of the kitchen is high thermal and chemical resistance and is good in the lower surface of the tile to create a form of expansion joint using anti-mould  silicone ANTI-MOULD. Aesthetically there is no problem because any space covered by a special joint covers made of PVC which prevent water ingress and have the same color and style with the bench.
  • In skirting behind the area of the kitchen bench and generally around the kitchen surface of the skirting should be an extension of the plaster (achieved with oblique putty) to achieve better hygiene of the place.
