Kitchen Tiling

What do we need?

The tiling in the kitchen presents increased requirements locally, especially in the points behind, above and around the countertop of the kitchen and the hood, because there is high thermal and chemical resistance and high temperature water vapor. The materials used must withstand frequent use of detergents and eliminate the risk of water vapor penetration behind the tiles.

How do we do it?

Ideal solution are adhesives with increased elasticity like VKW 129 and water-repellent grouts FMF 150 and FMF 160 LUX. Also recommended and waterproofing of masonry before paving with the waterproofing system of the acrylic brushable membrane DSF 300 FLEX HYDROSTOP.

Step by step

  1. To prepare the surface and applying the adhesive see the Guidelines for Adhesives.
  2. In the event that required filling and leveling of the floor it can be done with the cement floors of THRAKON.
  3. If required filling and leveling of the wall can be applied any of the plastering Systems of THRAKON.
  4. Before bonding the tiles waterproof surfaces using acrylic brushable membrane DSF 300 FLEX HYDROSTOP. 5.For grouting used the grouts of THRAKON. The floors grouting and patency is allowed after 24 hours, while wall grouting is allowed after 12 hours.

Signs of the application that need special attention:

  • For bonding tiles on the kitchen counter application is recommended to be done either with cementitious high elasticity adhesive  VKW 129 or by acrylic adhesive VKW 142 ACRYL. Correspondingly, the grouting of the counter is recommended to place the epoxy grout FMF 155 which is unaffected by chemicals, acids and cleaning agents.
  • The contact surface of the bench by the wall lined with tiles: When installing the bench care that the tiles cannot touch the surface of the bench and has a margin than 5mm in cases where the bench resting the plaster of the wall.
  • The adhesive must not come in contact with the surface of the bench but ends on the lower surface of the tile. This is because the bench of the kitchen is high thermal and chemical resistance and is good in the lower surface of the tile to create a form of expansion joint using anti-mould  silicone ANTI-MOULD. Aesthetically there is no problem because any space covered by a special joint covers made of PVC which prevent water ingress and have the same color and style with the bench.
  • In skirting behind the area of the kitchen bench and generally around the kitchen surface of the skirting should be an extension of the plaster (achieved with oblique putty) to achieve better hygiene of the place.
